Ally Academy

Overview

Ally academy is a workshop series that provides a culturally developmental space for organizations and individuals who want to create an equitable environment.

Purpose

The purpose of the Ally Academy is to create a culturally developmental space for those who value diversity, equity, and social justice who will assist with developing a diverse and inclusive environment for their organizations, communities, and families.

Powerful Presentations

  • In this workshop, participants will be introduced to social justice terms and gain an understanding of their own social identities. How a person identifies aligns with how they experience social power as a privileged, border, or targeted social identity. The central idea participants will learn is the Matrix of Social Identities.

    Learning Objectives:

    To increase participants’ knowledge of the definitions and concepts surrounding multiple identities, social power, social groups, privilege, target, border and oppression.

    To increase participants’ understanding of how they personally are woven into the Matrix of Social Identity.

    To increase participants’ understanding of the intersections that occur between systems of oppression.

  • In this interactive workshop participants will learn about the framework to describe the five distinct ways that oppression utilizes to target a social identity group. The workshop will conclude with an opportunity for reflection on how participants can combat oppression. The central idea is the five faces of oppression.

    Learning Objectives:

    Introducing participants to concepts of systemic oppression

    To increase participants’ understanding of how they personally are woven into the Five Faces of Oppression

    Introduce participants to the concepts of agent, target, and social identity.

  • During this interactive workshop participants will gain an understanding of how everyone holds implicit bias and ways to combat them. Specifically we will speak about microaggressions and allow for self-reflection on various ways to be inclusive and intergroup dialogue.

    Learning Objectives :

    Introducing participants to concepts of bias, prejudice, and discrimination.

    To increase participants’ understanding of microaggressions and how it can impact an individual of a targeted identity.

    Participants will gain an understanding of the difference between intent vs impact.

  • In this interactive workshop where participants will learn the phases of the cycle of socialization. There will be opportunity to dive deeper into each participant's cycle and reflect on the implications their youth still has on them today.

    Learning Outcomes:

    Introducing participants to the cycle of socialization

    To increase participants’ understanding of how social messages impact the way people think and behave in our society

  • In this interactive workshop that will provide an understanding of the applied, conscious vs unconscious, and contextual dimension of the Cube framework. Participants will engage in an activity to apply their knowledge of the Cube framework.

    Learning Outcomes:

    Introducing participants to the Cube framework

    Participants will gain an understanding of the different dimensions within the Cube framework (applied, conscious vs unconscious, and contextual)

  • During this interactive workshop will provide teach-outs for allyship, advocacy, and becoming a co-conspirator. Participants will also work in small groups to make connections between what they have learned throughout their time in Ally Academy to create change in their own lives and society.

    Learning Outcomes:

    Introducing participants to concepts of ally, advocate, and co-conspirator.

    Provide guided steps for participants to move past performative actions of allyship and into being true change agents.

**We recommend if you want to do sessions 4, 5, or 6 the group needs to participate in at least one of the foundational sessions (1-3).
